ARCOmadrid, 13th – 17th February, 2013

On the 1st February 2013, ARCOmadrid is being the first art fair to launch an advance art sale on the internet called COLLECT ONLINE. The new tool in collaboration with PADDLE 8, a virtual exhibition space, is meant to encourage especially young collectors to buy art works. The sale starts nearly two weeks prior to the actual beginning of the art fair and offers a selection of affordable works from the galleries participating at ARCOmadrid 2013, priced up to 5,000 euros. All these works can only be bought via this special online tool. Keeping up with the times has always been one of ARCOmadrid’s trademarks since its beginning more than three decades ago. In the light of revolutionary art market developments, such as the Affordable Art Fair founded in 1999 or the VIP Art Fair 2.0 launched in 2011 as the first onli-ne art fair, the Spanish art fair creates its own instruments.

ARCOmadrid’s commitment to innovation and the latest technologies becomes apparent in some more novelties at this year’s art fair. The use of QR codes for offering more information on the Highlighted Artists selected by each gallery as well as on emerging talents marks one of the various innovations.
Furthermore, the launch of ARCO Bloggers (www.arcobloggers.com), an online experiment conceived and coordinated by the journalists Roberta Bosco and Stefano Caldana offers a dynamic look at the contemporary art scene at a time of transition from analogue to digital media. In line with this, debate panels under the slogan “Contemporary art: online tools and strategies“ with leading contemporary art bloggers such as Allegra Burnette, Carlos Jiménez, Evan Roth, and Anne & Michael Spalter complete the digital platform as a participatory onli-ne editorial experience in the run-up to ARCOmadrid 2013.

The 32nd edition of ARCOmadrid, to be held from 13th to 17th February 2013, will bring to-gether a total of 202 galleries from 30 countries, among them Charim / Christine König / Nächst St. Stephan (Vienna), Mehdi Chouakri / Figge von Rosen (Berlin), Hans Meyer (Dusseldorf), Nusser & Baumgart (Munich), Mai 36 (Zurich), Max Wigram (London), Chantal Crousel / Air de Paris (Paris), Joan Prats (Barcelona), Guillermo de Osma / Ivorypress (Madrid), Vermelho / Luciana Brito (Sao Paulo), Kurimanzutto (Mexico City), Maçka Sanat Galerisi (Istanbul), and Christopher Grimes (Santa Monica). One of the main attractions will be the FOCUS TURKEY, curated by Vasif Kortun, director of research and programmes at the institution SALT Istanbul. Besides his groundbreaking curatorial work both within Turkey and abroad – among others, he curated the United Arab Emirates Pavilion for the Venice Biennial (2011) and the Turkish Pavilion for the São Paulo Biennial (1994/98) as well as the Venice Biennial (2007) – he is the founder and director of several contemporary art spaces in Istanbul such as the ICAP Istanbul Contemporary Art Project and the Platform Garanti Con-temporary Art Center.
